How does your media
product represent particular social groups?
The social
group that my media products represent are “Mods” and “skinheads”, they are not
very common today and if they are they are normally in their forties or fifties
however there is a small group of mods that are younger. The mods and skinheads
are primarily a male audience that listen to a genre of music called “SKA” and
“two tone” the two genres are quite similar. Some of the style of skinheads are
coming back too such as Doc Martins and Harrington Jackets. The signification
of this is that if the style is coming back then maybe a younger audience will
buy my magazine for the fashion section and advertising. I don’t think that the
style of mods will go out of fashion for a while because they pretty much just
wear suits and suits have been about for ages.
On
my front cover I got my friend to put on a suit to represent the mods because I
did not have any clothes to represent skinheads and I don’t think he looked
right for a skinhead either. I used the symbol that mods are represented by
which is the red, white and blue target that can be found on old fighter
planes. This symbol is also associated with “scooter boys”. The way I have represented
this social group best is mostly through photos I realise now that the language
I used in my media products probably were not best suited to the social group I
have chosen because it is too formal. The use of colours could have been done
better as well, I should have gone with red, white and blue but instead I went
with red, black, yellow and blue which made it a lot darker and I don’t think
darker colours are associated with this social group. The poses that are used
on my magazine pages are quite relaxed and are nothing extreme. You may or may
not notice the cover lines on the left side of the magazine and on photoshop
these stood out very well however I realised that they are not that noticeable
on anything else. One thing I did well was to stick with your stereotypical mod
which was done by getting him to wear the suit. Some people would say that the
Beatles were mods and I think that the look I got was intertextual to them.
As a rempresentation of teenage males do you tink your magazine challenges or reinforces stereotypes about them? You need to consider what these stereotypes are and then think about how what you have portrayed is similar to or different from them. Eg many media images of teen males focus on them as a threat, and agressive and anti-authority. Do your images back that up or challenge it?
